Key opinion
Rust is viewed as a functional but disjointed Western that struggles to balance its ambitious thematic inquiries with a repetitive, game-like narrative structure. While its earnest approach to frontier life and unexpected conclusion offer some intrigue, the film is hampered by uneven pacing and a lack of cohesive storytelling.
| Theme | The film effectively avoids genre clichés by engaging in a thoughtful critique of justice and law enforcement in the late 19th-century frontier. | |
| Screenplay | The narrative structure feels artificial and disjointed, resembling a series of loosely connected, repetitive missions rather than a cohesive film. | |
| Production | The production design authentically captures the desolate, barren plains and the gritty atmosphere of post-Civil War American life. | |
| Pacing | The film's tempo creates a divide: some find its contemplative, compact nature engaging, while others experience it as a drowsy, exhausting slog. |
