Key opinion
Tokyo Ghoul S is viewed as a divisive adaptation that offers improvement over its predecessor in character development for specific villains but suffers from inconsistent production values. While some viewers appreciate the focused narrative and compelling villain performance, others criticize the cut content and lackluster visual effects compared to the source material.
| Acting | Shota Matsuda delivers an exceptional and captivating performance as Shu Tsukiyama, effectively anchoring the film's conflict. | |
| Screenplay | The narrative succeeds as a standalone entry by streamlining arcs, though it frustrates fans of the anime due to significant omissions and truncated character backstories. | |
| Production | The CGI rendering of the kagune and flesh effects is technically crude and fails to convincingly translate the visceral nature of the original source material. | |
| Cinematography | The visual presentation is underwhelming, characterized by washed-out color grading that detracts from the film's atmospheric potential. |
