Key opinion
Secretariat is widely regarded as a well-crafted, emotionally resonant family drama that successfully captures the triumphant spirit of its true-life source material. While many critics and viewers praise the high production value and strong lead performances, others find the narrative to be overly formulaic and predictable.
| Cinematography | The racing sequences are visually stunning and capture the tension and intensity of the sport with great technical precision. | |
| Acting | Diane Lane and John Malkovich deliver strong, anchoring performances that elevate the material above a standard sports biopic. | |
| Theme | The film functions effectively as an uplifting and accessible family drama, though this approach leads some to criticize it for feeling like a glossy 'Disney fairy tale.' | |
| Screenplay | The narrative follows a predictable, formulaic structure that some viewers embrace as satisfying and others reject as artificial or banal. |
