Key opinion
Syndrome is a visually atmospheric Russian horror film that leverages the bleak, claustrophobic setting of St. Petersburg to build genuine tension. While opinions on the narrative quality and performances are split, many viewers appreciate the film's ability to craft an unsettling urban legend despite its derivative premise.
| Production | The cinematography and production design effectively use the gloomy, snow-laden St. Petersburg landscape to create a pervasive sense of dread and isolation. | |
| Originality | The narrative draws heavily on genre conventions popularized by films like It Follows, leading to critiques of its derivative and simplistic plot structure. | |
| Acting | Performances are divisive; some praise the convincing chemistry and emotional range of the lead duo, while others dismiss the acting as poor and implausible. | |
| Screenplay | The screenplay is a point of contention, with supporters finding it an engaging urban horror mystery, while detractors highlight nonsensical logic, plot holes, and lack of internal realism. |
