Key opinion
Smiley Face is a divisive cult film that polarized audiences between those who see it as a vapid, plotless failure and those who find it a uniquely layered, surreal study of aimlessness. While Anna Faris's physically committed performance is universally noted, reactions range from finding her portrayal hilarious and authentic to repulsive and unwatchable.
| Acting | Anna Faris delivers a physically transformative, highly committed performance that anchors the film's chaotic energy. | |
| Theme | The film functions less as a traditional laugh-out-loud comedy and more as a surreal, often melancholic exploration of addiction and aimless youth. | |
| Direction | Gregg Araki's direction leans into an absurdist, arthouse aesthetic that confuses viewers expecting a standard, high-energy stoner comedy. | |
| Humor | The humor is polarizing, with some viewers praising its bizarre, slapstick-adjacent absurdity while others find the jokes flat, repetitive, or outright repulsive. | |
| Screenplay | The narrative structure is divisive; proponents admire its dreamlike, non-linear progression, while detractors criticize the lack of a cohesive plot or meaningful character growth. | |
| Accessibility | The film's appeal is limited; its niche, surrealist tone creates a barrier for mainstream audiences looking for a conventional comedy experience. |
