Soldier Blue is a starkly polarizing revisionist Western that juxtaposes a conventional, often clichéd, romantic trek against a harrowing and graphic depiction of the Sand Creek massacre. While its historical boldness in challenging myths of American expansion remains noted, critics are divided by the jarring tonal shift between its lighthearted middle act and its extreme, exploitative finale.

Emotion The final act delivers an unflinching, visceral depiction of historical atrocities that leaves a profound emotional impact through its sheer brutality.
Originality The film acts as a significant subversion of the traditional Western myth, explicitly reframing the narrative of 'civilizing' forces to highlight documented military massacres.
Pacing The transition from a tepid, formulaic romance to a savage, exploitation-style war drama creates a jarring structural divide that leaves viewers feeling either captivated or alienated.
Acting The characterization of the two leads follows generic, clichéd tropes that fail to ground the narrative during the film's long middle section.
Theme The graphic violence is perceived by some as a necessary, sobering confrontation with historical truth, while others view it as gratuitous, exploitative shock value.
