Key opinion
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is widely regarded as a successful, fun family adventure that improves upon its predecessor by integrating more characters and lore from the source games. While some critics view it as a formulaic studio product, most audiences and reviewers find Jim Carrey’s charismatic performance and the energetic, nostalgic tone to be highly satisfying.
| Acting | Jim Carrey delivers an engaging, hammy, and physically comedic performance that serves as the film's standout highlight. | |
| Adaptation | The integration of iconic franchise elements like Tails and Knuckles successfully expands the world and deepens the source material adaptation. | |
| Production | The film utilizes high-quality CGI and visual effects to create action sequences that effectively evoke the energy of the original video games. | |
| Runtime | The 120-minute runtime is a point of contention: many find it an energetic ride, while others feel the middle section sags and the film is ultimately too long. | |
| Screenplay | Opinions on the screenplay are divided; some praise its functional humor and family-friendly heart, while others dismiss the narrative as thin, formulaic, and overly reliant on predictable tropes. |
