Species II is widely regarded as a lackluster and derivative sequel that trades the atmospheric tension of the original for hollow spectacle and excessive gore. While some viewers find entertainment in its creature designs and B-movie erotic horror elements, the general consensus is that the film fails to recapture the quality of its predecessor due to poor performances and a lackluster script.

Acting The performances are consistently viewed as weak, with the returning cast failing to recapture the spark of the original film.
Screenplay The screenplay is criticized for being predictable, superficial, and lacking the originality found in its genre predecessors.
Emotion The film attempts to compensate for its narrative flaws by leaning heavily into eroticism and graphic, visceral gore.
Production Opinions on the practical effects are polarized, with some praising the grotesque, imaginative monster designs while others dismiss them as low-budget and dated.
