Key opinion
Splice is a polarizing science-fiction film that earns praise for its compelling, Frankenstein-inspired premise and impressive creature design. However, many viewers find the execution uneven, noting that the narrative descends from an intriguing psychological study into a disappointing or vulgar final act.
| Acting | Delphine Chanéac delivers an expressive, nuanced performance as Dren that effectively conveys complex emotions without dialogue. | |
| Production | The creature effects and visual design are technically proficient, grounding the hybrid character in a realistic and unsettling way. | |
| Theme | The film attempts a sophisticated exploration of genetic ethics and Freudian psychology, though it often lacks sufficient emotional resonance. | |
| Screenplay | The narrative trajectory is inconsistent, beginning as a compelling intellectual sci-fi study but collapsing into unearned shock value and gratuitous turns in the second half. | |
| Ending | The ending remains a major point of contention; some appreciate the unpredictable or tragic conclusion, while others find it rushed, unresolved, or tonally dissonant. |
