Key opinion
Gennady Sidorov's 'Starye' is a poignant, pseudo-documentary exploration of abandoned post-Soviet rural life, focusing on a community of elderly women living in poverty. While some viewers praise its life-affirming spirit and authentic character studies, others interpret it as a stark, systemic critique of a decaying, depersonalized society.
| Acting | The casting of local non-professional residents alongside actress Valentina Berezutsyk creates a powerful, hyper-authentic sense of place and character. | |
| Cinematography | The pseudo-documentary visual style successfully captures the bleak, tangible reality of a forsaken, crumbling Russian countryside. | |
| Theme | The film avoids sentimental nostalgia, instead framing the elderly villagers as a resilient, mutually supportive collective navigating the ruins of Soviet ideology. | |
| Emotion | The narrative balance between profound sadness and subtle, organic humor creates an emotional resonance that avoids being overly grim. | |
| Theme | Interpretations of the film's social commentary are divided: some see a celebratory portrait of human endurance, while others view it as a detached study of a dehumanized, broken social archetype. |
