Key opinion
Sunshine is widely lauded for its breathtaking visual design and evocative score, which create a powerful, immersive atmosphere. However, the film is deeply divisive regarding its narrative shift in the final act, where many critics feel a transition into slasher-horror tropes undermines the film's initial philosophical and hard science-fiction ambitions.
| Cinematography | Visually stunning cinematography and expert CGI effectively convey the scale of the Sun and the terror of deep space. | |
| Score | John Murphy's evocative and memorable score serves as a vital component in establishing the film's emotional intensity. | |
| Acting | The ensemble cast delivers strong, capable performances that anchor the human elements of the mission. | |
| Ending | The shift from a thoughtful, hard science-fiction premise to a chaotic, horror-influenced final act creates a jarring and unsatisfying conclusion for many. | |
| Screenplay | The film balances philosophical inquiries into sacrifice and humanity with intense, suspenseful drama, though some find the character development thin or inconsistent. |
