Key opinion
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows generally succeeds as an energetic, fan-service-heavy blockbuster that improves upon its predecessor's technical execution. While fans of the franchise appreciate the inclusion of classic characters and the lighter tone, critics and some viewers find the plot formulaic, the character work thin, and the action sequences overwhelmingly chaotic.
| Production | The film effectively utilizes high-budget CGI and visual effects to create a more polished aesthetic than the 2014 entry. | |
| Adaptation | The inclusion of classic 80s cartoon characters like Bebop, Rocksteady, and Krang provides effective and satisfying nostalgia for long-time fans. | |
| Screenplay | The screenplay is widely criticized for being thin, formulaic, and reliant on repetitive blockbuster tropes. | |
| Direction | Opinions on the action are split: some find the Michael Bay-style spectacle thrilling and entertaining, while others characterize it as messy, disorienting, and lacking genuine stakes. | |
| Humor | The humor is polarizing, with some viewers finding it a fun, lighthearted fit for the franchise, while others dismiss it as childish and low-brow. | |
| Acting | Character development is a point of contention; while some appreciate the focus on the Turtles' internal identity struggles, others argue the cast is reduced to cardboard archetypes. |
