Peter Parker is an outcast high schooler abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben and Aunt May. Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors, his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

The Amazing Spider-Man is viewed as a polarizing reboot that modernizes the franchise with a more youth-oriented, indie-inflected aesthetic. While many praise the chemistry between Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, others find the film suffers from unnecessary comparisons to the Sam Raimi trilogy and a narrative that treads too much familiar ground.

Acting Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone demonstrate strong chemistry and believable performances that anchor the film's emotional core.
Cinematography The 3D cinematography and web-swinging sequences provide an immersive, high-quality visual experience.
Acting The film’s tone is sharply divided between those who appreciate the modern, angsty teenage portrayal of Peter Parker and those who find the characterization 'clownish' or inferior to Tobey Maguire’s version.
Pacing The pacing is viewed as a point of contention; some appreciate the deliberate character development, while others find the film, particularly the first half, to be tedious and slow.
Screenplay Critics are split on the screenplay, with some praising its fresh, modern take on the origin story, while others criticize it as a redundant, inconsistent, or hollow rehash of the 2002 original.
Originality The villain, Dr. Connors/The Lizard, draws mixed reactions regarding the effectiveness of his design and motivations compared to the iconic antagonists of the original franchise.
