Key opinion
The Brutalist is widely regarded as a visually monumental and technically masterful achievement, anchored by compelling lead performances. While critics and audiences praise its ambition, the film is divided by its massive runtime and a perceived decline in narrative focus and character coherence during the latter half.
| Acting | Adrien Brody and Guy Pearce deliver commanding, high-caliber performances that anchor the film's intense emotional stakes. | |
| Cinematography | The use of VistaVision cinematography and meticulous technical craft creates a visually stunning, immersive atmosphere. | |
| Runtime | The 3.5-hour runtime is a point of contention; some viewers find the slow, deliberate pace essential for a monumental experience, while others find the latter half sags and becomes narratively exhausting. | |
| Pacing | The narrative structure is uneven, with the compelling, well-paced first half giving way to a chaotic, less focused second half. | |
| Ending | The film's final act and character motivations are criticized for being gratuitous, opaque, or lacking logical development. |
