Key opinion
The Chaser is widely regarded as a gripping and visceral entry in the Korean thriller genre, noted for its subversion of standard serial-killer tropes. While many critics applaud its tension, realism, and critique of institutional failure, some viewers are frustrated by perceived illogical character choices and extreme police incompetence.
| Originality | The film succeeds in subverting Hollywood genre conventions by capturing the killer early and shifting the focus to a desperate, real-time pursuit. | |
| Acting | The lead actors, Kim Yun-seok and Ha Jung-woo, deliver powerful, layered performances that anchor the intense narrative. | |
| Pacing | The film maintains a relentless, high-stakes atmosphere that keeps the audience deeply engaged until the final moments. | |
| Screenplay | Opinions on the screenplay are divided: supporters value its raw, unflinching look at societal corruption, while critics find the plot riddled with illogical character decisions and absurdly incompetent law enforcement. | |
| Theme | The portrayal of police as bureaucratic and inept is a polarizing choice; some view it as a biting social critique, while others find it to be an unrealistic and frustrating narrative device. |
