Key opinion
The 2024 adaptation of The Crow is widely viewed as a disjointed and hollow effort that fails to replicate the gothic resonance of the 1994 original. While Bill Skarsgård’s physical performance and the film's stylized visuals receive occasional praise, these are overshadowed by a weak, unconvincing script and a central romance that many find emotionally inert.
| Acting | Bill Skarsgård delivers a dedicated and compelling physical performance that stands out as the film's strongest asset despite being hampered by thin writing. | |
| Cinematography | The film features striking, gothic-inspired cinematography and inventive sequences, such as the opera house scene, which provide a visually engaging experience. | |
| Screenplay | The central romance between Eric and Shelly is widely criticized as underdeveloped and unconvincing, failing to establish the emotional stakes necessary for the audience to care about the protagonist's quest. | |
| Screenplay | The script is frequently described as thin and illogical, relying on shallow tropes and failing to flesh out the motivations of the characters or the central supernatural premise. | |
| Pacing | Critics are divided on the film's pacing: some find the slow-burn, atmosphere-heavy segments to be a welcome stylistic choice, while others find the film to be tedious, dragging in the middle and lacking narrative momentum. | |
| Originality | Opinions on the film's departure from the 1994 classic vary, with some appreciating the attempt to create a unique aesthetic and modern interpretation, while others reject it as an unoriginal and unnecessary imitation that lacks the original’s soul. |
