After a personal tragedy, Sarah joins her friends on a caving expedition in the Appalachian Mountains. But when a rockfall traps them deep underground, their adventure turns into a nightmare. Key opinion
The Descent is viewed as a divisive genre entry that relies heavily on atmospheric tension while struggling with character depth. While some find its technical execution effective at inducing claustrophobia, others criticize the script as uninspired and the character dynamics as flat.
| Cinematography | The technical mastery of lighting and acoustic design succeeds in crafting a genuine sense of subterranean claustrophobia. | |
| Screenplay | The writing fails to provide compelling or well-developed character dynamics, leading to a cast that feels largely interchangeable. | |
| Pacing | The film's pacing is polarizing, as the slow-burn approach is perceived by some as an effective atmospheric build-up and by others as fundamentally boring. |
