Shohoku's “speedster” and point guard, Ryota Miyagi, always plays with brains and lightning speed, running circles around his opponents while feigning composure. In his second year of high school, Ryota plays with the Shohoku High School basketball team along with Sakuragi, Rukawa, Akagi, and Mitsui as they take the stage at the Inter-High School National Championship. And now, they are on the brink of challenging the reigning champions, Sannoh Kogyo High School.

Key opinion
The First Slam Dunk is widely praised for its innovative use of 2D/3D hybrid animation to capture the visceral intensity of basketball. While the film succeeds as a sophisticated sports drama, its decision to shift focus toward character trauma and backstories divides viewers who expected a more traditional ensemble focus.
| Cinematography | The hybrid 2D/3D animation and rotoscoping techniques effectively capture the dynamic energy and physical intensity of basketball games. | |
| Theme | The film functions as an ambitious, emotionally resonant sports drama that honors its source material while exploring the psychological weight of its characters. | |
| Accessibility | The narrative assumes prior knowledge of the manga or anime series, creating a significant barrier to entry for newcomers. | |
| Screenplay | The shift in narrative focus from the traditional ensemble to Miyagi’s personal trauma leaves some fans feeling that key characters like Sakuragi lack their usual impact. | |
| Pacing | The heavy reliance on flashbacks and the emotional weight of sibling-related angst is viewed by some as an exhausting distraction from the core sports narrative. |
