Key opinion
The Garfield Movie is a polarizing family film that succeeds as lighthearted, energetic entertainment for children but struggles to satisfy long-time fans of the source material. While some viewers appreciate the fresh exploration of Garfield's lineage, others feel the characterization and tone deviate too far from the cynical, lazy cat audiences know.
| Accessibility | The film succeeds as an accessible, lighthearted experience for families and younger viewers looking for simple, unpretentious fun. | |
| Theme | The introduction of the father-son dynamic provides a core emotional arc that resonates with some viewers through its focus on loyalty and reconciliation. | |
| Originality | The decision to make Garfield physically active and energetic throughout a heist plot clashes with the character’s traditional identity as a lazy, sedentary indoor cat. | |
| Adaptation | The narrative structure and character design fail to capture the spirit of the original comics, with some viewers finding the visual style and new canon additions to be jarring or derivative. | |
| Screenplay | Opinions on the screenplay are divided: some find the humor and heist-themed plot to be a delightful modern twist, while others criticize it as weak, underdeveloped, or overly reliant on standard tropes. | |
| Acting | The performance of Chris Pratt is a point of contention, viewed by some as an effective capture of Garfield's sarcasm, while others dismiss the voice casting as unconvincing or phoned-in. |
