Description
A young girl is raised in a dysfunctional family constantly on the run from the FBI. Living in poverty, she comes of age guided by her drunkard, ingenious father who distracts her with magical stories to keep her mind off the family's dire state, and her selfish, nonconformist mother who has no intention of raising a family, along with her younger brother and sister, and her other older sister. Together, they fend for each other as they mature in an unorthodox journey that is their family life.

Key opinion
The Glass Castle is an emotionally resonant drama that explores the complex, often traumatic bond between children and their unconventional, neglectful parents. While praised for its powerful performances and empathetic portrayal of familial love, the film divides critics who either appreciate its moving, human-centric focus or criticize it for glossing over the darker realities of the source material.
| Acting | Woody Harrelson delivers a standout, nuanced performance that captures the charismatic but deeply flawed nature of the father. | |
| Emotion | The film succeeds in portraying a complex, non-idealized family dynamic that evokes deep emotional responses and personal reflection. | |
| Screenplay | The narrative structure effectively utilizes parallel childhood and adulthood storylines to illustrate the enduring impact of parental upbringing. | |
| Adaptation | The film’s tone is polarizing: some view it as a heartfelt and empathetic adaptation, while others argue it adopts a glossy Hollywood veneer that softens the harsh realities of the original memoir. |
