Key opinion
Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby is a visually opulent and faithful adaptation that succeeds as a tragic, emotionally resonant experience for many viewers. While Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance is widely praised, the film’s heavy stylistic flourishes and anachronistic soundtrack remain significant points of contention.
| Acting | Leonardo DiCaprio delivers a masterful, nuanced performance that effectively anchors the film's emotional core. | |
| Production | The production design, costumes, and sets are spectacularly crafted, successfully capturing the lavish, excess-filled atmosphere of the 1920s. | |
| Adaptation | The screenplay remains highly faithful to the source material, effectively translating Fitzgerald’s narrative and themes to the screen. | |
| Score | The contemporary, anachronistic soundtrack divides viewers, with some finding it a bold stylistic choice and others viewing it as a jarring clash with the period setting. | |
| Acting | The acting performances of Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan are subject to debate, with some praising their contributions while others find their portrayals inadequate or weak. | |
| Direction | Luhrmann's signature fast-paced, FX-heavy visual style is polarizing; some find it immersive and vibrant, while others see it as excessive and distracting. |
