Key opinion
The 2020 reboot of The Grudge is widely considered a redundant and lackluster addition to the franchise. While some critics acknowledge the director's attempt at a non-linear, anthology-style structure, most viewers felt the film relied too heavily on cheap jump scares and a weak screenplay, failing to capture the atmospheric dread of the original series.
| Originality | The film relies on predictable jump scares and tired horror tropes rather than building the genuine atmospheric dread characteristic of the franchise. | |
| Screenplay | The screenplay is widely criticized as simplistic, nonsensical, and filled with unnatural dialogue that hinders the audience's engagement. | |
| Acting | While the cast features capable performers like Andrea Riseborough and John Cho, they are largely seen as underutilized or miscast in a project with such weak material. | |
| Screenplay | The ambitious non-linear, anthology-style narrative structure is praised by some as a fresh attempt to evolve the formula, while others find it disjointed and poorly executed. | |
| Cinematography | Visual presentation is a point of debate; some reviewers admire the dark, realistic cinematography and sound design, while others dismiss the production as a lazy, uninspired effort. |
