Key opinion
Alexandre Aja's 2006 remake is widely regarded as a superior, more intense version of the 1977 original that successfully modernizes the concept. While opinions on the film's reliance on graphic gore and its slow-burning pacing vary, it is generally praised for its oppressive atmosphere, effective practical effects, and high-stakes survival narrative.
| Production | The film utilizes visceral, high-quality practical makeup and prosthetics to bring the mutant antagonists to life. | |
| Score | The musical score successfully amplifies the film's sense of dread and emotional intensity. | |
| Screenplay | The narrative benefits from the evolution of the protagonist from a timid humanist into a fierce, ruthless protector. | |
| Emotion | The film's relentless focus on graphic violence and sadism serves as an effective, honest representation of modern horror for some, while others feel it pushes the boundaries into gratuity. | |
| Pacing | The three-act structure draws praise for building empathy during the deliberate opening, yet some viewers find the plot progression feels prolonged or repetitive by the ending. |
