Key opinion
The Hunchback of Notre Dame II is widely viewed as an inferior follow-up to the original, suffering from significantly lower production values and a lack of narrative complexity. While some appreciate its shift toward a lighter, more hopeful focus on Quasimodo's personal happiness, most critics find the execution to be flat and uninspired.
| Production | The animation quality suffers from a drastic decline, featuring flat, cheap visuals that lack the artistic depth and splendor of the 1996 original. | |
| Screenplay | The screenplay fails to recapture the gravitas of its predecessor, trading complex themes and dark, atmospheric storytelling for a simplistic, dull plot. | |
| Score | The music lacks the ambition and resonance of the original film's iconic musical numbers. | |
| Theme | Opinions on the thematic shift are divided; some view the departure from adult themes as a dilution of the franchise's identity, while others find the focus on Quasimodo's simple, happy romantic arc to be a natural and effective direction. | |
| Runtime | The 68-minute runtime is a point of contention: critics view the brevity as a sign of an underdeveloped, filler-heavy narrative, whereas proponents see it as an efficient length that prevents the film from becoming an unwatchable failure. |
