Key opinion
The Kid is a modest, atmospheric Western that draws praise for its strong performances but faces significant criticism for a formulaic and underdeveloped screenplay. While some appreciate its adherence to classical genre tropes, others find the narrative disjointed and lacking in meaningful character growth.
| Acting | Ethan Hawke delivers a nuanced and charismatic performance that elevates the role of Sheriff Pat Garrett. | |
| Production | The production design successfully captures a dark, authentic Western atmosphere that resonates with genre enthusiasts. | |
| Screenplay | The script is largely viewed as a derivative, paint-by-numbers collection of Western clichés that fails to offer original insights. | |
| Screenplay | The narrative structure suffers from a confused focus, struggling to balance the perspective of the child protagonist with the historical rivalry of its legendary figures. | |
| Acting | Opinions on the casting of Jake Schur as the young lead are deeply divided, with some viewing his performance as a success and others finding his character presence distracting or underwhelming. |
