Key opinion
The Knight of Shadows is a visually vibrant fantasy film that leans heavily into the tropes of Chinese New Year family entertainment. While audiences appreciate the film's aesthetic production design and Jackie Chan's charismatic screen presence, there is significant disagreement regarding the disjointed narrative and the effectiveness of the action sequences.
| Production | The production design features high-quality costumes, patterns, and visual effects that effectively create a classical Chinese fantasy aesthetic. | |
| Acting | Jackie Chan provides a charming performance that anchors the film, even when sharing the screen with multiple leads. | |
| Pacing | The pacing is viewed as both acceptably dynamic for a family film and overly long, with some viewers finding the final act exhausting. | |
| Screenplay | The screenplay is divisive, with some finding the human-demon romance touching and effective, while others describe it as a confusing and trivial melodrama. | |
| Acting | The action sequences are polarizing, split between those who enjoy the visually effective magical fights and those who find the toned-down choreography disappointing. |
