Key opinion
The Legend of the Drunken Master is widely considered a pinnacle of martial arts cinema, celebrated for its peerless stunt work and charismatic performances. While the film is hailed as a masterpiece of the genre, some viewers find the addition of a heavy political subplot to be a slight detraction compared to the original.
| Acting | Jackie Chan's physical performance, including the daring fire-coal stunt, remains unmatched in the genre for its authenticity and skill. | |
| Direction | The fight choreography is exceptionally fluid and inventive, seamlessly blending slapstick humor with high-stakes martial arts mastery. | |
| Acting | Anita Mui delivers a vibrant and essential comedic performance that effectively balances Jackie Chan's role. | |
| Screenplay | The plot's heavy-handed focus on protecting Chinese heritage and colonial political tensions is viewed by some as an unnecessary departure from the lighter tone of the 1978 original. |
