The Messengers is widely regarded as a generic and predictable haunted-house film that fails to deliver genuine suspense or scares. While the production design and visual effects receive some praise, the film relies heavily on tired genre clichés and a weak script, leaving Kristen Stewart's performance as the primary point of interest for most viewers.
| Screenplay | The screenplay is widely criticized for relying on formulaic tropes, predictable plot developments, and illogical character behavior. | |
| Emotion | The film fails to effectively execute its genre goals, with many viewers finding it devoid of genuine tension, suspense, or effective horror scares. | |
| Acting | Opinions on Kristen Stewart's performance are divided; some critics praise her ability to anchor the film with nuance and fear, while others find her acting repetitive and lackluster. | |
| Production | The production design, specifically the farm setting and the use of high-quality CGI effects, is frequently cited as the film's strongest technical element. |
