Key opinion
Frank Darabont’s adaptation of Stephen King’s novella is widely recognized as a powerful, albeit divisive, character study that prioritizes human breakdown over traditional monster-movie tropes. While critics and audiences frequently praise the film's unflinching tone and iconic, shocking finale, opinions diverge significantly regarding the quality of the acting and the execution of the low-budget creature effects.
| Ending | The film’s devastating, nihilistic finale serves as a masterstroke of provocative storytelling that remains its most debated and memorable element. | |
| Theme | The narrative excels at illustrating the breakdown of social order, effectively using the supermarket setting as a crucible for human behavior under extreme duress. | |
| Acting | Marsha Gay Harden delivers a standout, harrowing performance as the religious extremist whose fanaticism drives the group's descent into chaos. | |
| Production | The creature designs and Lovecraftian atmosphere are praised for their creativity, though some viewers find the aging CGI and low-budget technical execution distracting. | |
| Acting | Performances are a point of contention; many find the cast’s portrayal of fear and grief believable and powerful, while others dismiss the acting as over-the-top or artificial. | |
| Pacing | The film's pacing is viewed by some as an immersive, slow-burn exploration of tension, whereas others criticize the midsection for being repetitive and overly long. |
