Key opinion
The Outrun is widely praised for Saoirse Ronan's commanding performance, which anchors an intimate look at addiction and recovery. While the film's visual portrayal of the Scottish landscape is consistently lauded, critics are divided over its non-linear narrative structure and the effectiveness of its storytelling approach.
| Acting | Saoirse Ronan delivers a phenomenal, career-defining performance that holds the film together. | |
| Cinematography | The cinematography masterfully captures the windswept, harsh beauty of the Orkney Islands to reflect the protagonist's internal state. | |
| Score | The film utilizes innovative sound design and electronic music to successfully immerse the viewer in the protagonist's state of psychological isolation. | |
| Editing | The non-linear, fragmented editing style effectively mirrors the cyclical and disorienting nature of addiction for some, but feels confusing and disjointed to others. | |
| Screenplay | The screenplay is praised for its poetic, realistic depiction of recovery, yet criticized by some for lacking clear thematic focus and depth regarding the causes of the protagonist's struggle. |
