Key opinion
The Princess Diaries is generally regarded as a charming, upbeat, and rewatchable teen comedy that succeeds primarily due to Anne Hathaway's lead performance. While it is criticized for relying on predictable "ugly-duckling" tropes and deviating from its literary source material, many viewers find it a sweet and well-intentioned coming-of-age story.
| Acting | Anne Hathaway provides a charismatic, anchoring performance that elevates the film's otherwise clichéd material. | |
| Screenplay | The screenplay leans heavily on predictable "ugly-duckling" and "surprise royalty" tropes that many viewers find formulaic. | |
| Humor | The humor is polarizing; some find it charmingly lighthearted, while others dismiss the gags as shallow, cringey, or ineffective. | |
| Adaptation | Fans of the original books are largely disappointed by the adaptation's failure to capture the depth of the characters and its significant deviations from the source text. | |
| Pacing | The film's pacing is viewed differently: some appreciate the relaxed, feel-good atmosphere, while others find sections of the narrative to be tedious or lacking momentum. |
