Key opinion
The Purge: Election Year serves as an ambitious but polarizing conclusion to the trilogy, successfully expanding the franchise's political scope while suffering from narrative repetition. While some appreciate its heightened scale and social commentary, others criticize the flat characterization and lack of original ideas.
| Originality | The film successfully broadens the franchise's world-building by integrating political intrigue and shifting the threat to include elite government officials. | |
| Acting | Frank Grillo delivers a competent and anchoring performance as Leo Barnes, though his character development stagnates compared to the previous installment. | |
| Screenplay | The narrative relies heavily on established slasher tropes and repetitive survival scenarios, offering little deviation from the series' formula. | |
| Theme | Character depth is frequently sacrificed for broad, allegorical political messaging, leaving the lead figures feeling flat and implausible. | |
| Production | Opinions on the film's scale and tone are divided; supporters enjoy the increased production design and varied imagery, while critics find it exhausting or lacking in the tension of the earlier entries. |
