Key opinion
The Rite is a middling supernatural drama that benefits from Anthony Hopkins’ commanding presence but struggles to reconcile its psychological ambitions with tired genre tropes. While some viewers appreciate its contemplative approach to faith and skepticism, many find the plot predictable, the horror elements uninspired, and the film lacking the intensity of its predecessors.
| Acting | Anthony Hopkins delivers a powerful and convincing performance that serves as the film's primary anchor. | |
| Cinematography | Ben Davis's cinematography provides high-quality lighting and composition that elevates the production's visual aesthetic. | |
| Screenplay | The screenplay is heavily criticized for its reliance on clichéd plot developments and a predictable, unfulfilling narrative arc. | |
| Direction | The film is caught between being a psychological character study and a traditional horror movie, resulting in a tonal conflict that fails to satisfy either expectation. | |
| Theme | The protagonist's journey is a point of contention: some find his struggle with faith and skepticism to be a nuanced thematic hook, while others perceive the character development as flat and unconvincing. |
