Key opinion
The Silent War is a solid, well-acted period spy thriller that favors character-driven tension over explosive action. While the lead performances are widely praised, the film's conservative narrative structure and uneven conclusion prevent it from reaching the status of a classic.
| Acting | Tony Leung and Zhou Xun deliver powerhouse performances that serve as the film's emotional and technical anchor. | |
| Direction | The directors successfully establish a tense, atmospheric aesthetic that leans into classic espionage tropes. | |
| Pacing | The film deliberately avoids graphic action, focusing instead on the internal lives and hidden struggles of its characters. | |
| Screenplay | The screenplay is criticized for being overly conventional and needing tighter development to truly elevate the premise. | |
| Ending | Opinions on the conclusion are divided; some find the emotional payoff powerful and moving, while others feel the ending is poorly executed and undermines the narrative. |
