Key opinion
The Smurfs is generally viewed as a lightweight, child-oriented diversion that succeeds in keeping young audiences occupied while failing to resonate with adult viewers or critics. Opinions are starkly polarized between those who find its simple charms and performances enjoyable and those who dismiss it as a cynical, slapstick-heavy product with a shallow, cliché-ridden script.
| Acting | Hank Azaria delivers a standout performance as Gargamel, effectively anchoring the film's conflict with his physical comedy. | |
| Screenplay | The repetitive use of the 'smurf' prefix in dialogue creates a divisive effect, with some finding it a creative linguistic quirk and others viewing it as tiresome or grating. | |
| Screenplay | The plot is widely criticized as being overly predictable, formulaic, and lacking in depth, functioning more as a thin vehicle for jokes than a coherent narrative. | |
| Humor | The reliance on crude slapstick and toilet humor is a point of contention, praised by some for entertaining children but condemned by others as vulgar and uninspired. | |
| Production | The mixture of live-action and CGI animation is technically adequate for its purpose, though it lacks the visual spectacle or charm to distinguish itself as a high-quality production. |
