Key opinion
The Substitute is a prototypical 90s action thriller that leans heavily on Tom Berenger’s charismatic performance to elevate a otherwise formulaic premise. While it offers a gritty, compelling atmosphere that resonates with fans of the era’s genre cinema, many critics find the plot predictable and the supporting characters underdeveloped.
| Acting | Tom Berenger delivers a grounded and charismatic performance that serves as the film's primary anchor. | |
| Production | The film successfully captures a gritty, immersive urban atmosphere that effectively communicates the tension of a gang-controlled school environment. | |
| Screenplay | The plot follows a predictable 'teacher versus gang' formula that often descends into disposable, one-time-watch territory. | |
| Originality | Opinions are divided on the storytelling approach: some appreciate the protagonist’s pragmatic, non-superhero reliance on mercenary backup and armor, while others find the narrative progression too simplistic and lacking in genuine dramatic depth. |
