Key opinion
Haeundae is a genre-blending disaster film that prioritizes human melodrama and emotional stakes over consistent narrative logic. While viewers are polarized by the heavy focus on slow-paced character subplots, the second-half transition into high-stakes catastrophe and impressive visual effects leaves a strong, often tear-jerking, impression.
| Emotion | The film effectively pairs large-scale VFX-driven catastrophe with intense, tear-jerking emotional drama that lingers through the credits. | |
| Pacing | The narrative structure is defined by a slow, melodrama-heavy first half that prioritizes mundane character subplots before transitioning into a disaster-driven climax. | |
| Humor | The balance between slapstick humor and genuine tragedy creates a jarring tone that some find authentic to Korean cinema and others perceive as farcical or silly. | |
| Cinematography | The technical execution of the tsunami sequences provides realistic and palpable tension, though certain action set-pieces are criticized for defying logic and physics. |
