In the year 2035, convict James Cole reluctantly volunteers to be sent back in time to discover the origin of a deadly virus that wiped out nearly all of the earth's population and forced the survivors into underground communities. But when Cole is mistakenly sent to 1990 instead of 1996, he's arrested and locked up in a mental hospital. There he meets psychiatrist Dr. Kathryn Railly and the son of a famous virus expert who may hold the key to the Army of the 12 Monkeys; thought to be responsible for unleashing the killer disease.

Twelve Monkeys is widely regarded as an immersive, thought-provoking sci-fi thriller that excels through its unique atmosphere and complex, non-linear narrative. While most critics and viewers praise its bold direction and standout performances, some find the labyrinthine plot and surrealist tone divisive.

Acting Brad Pitt delivers a career-defining, wildly energetic performance that anchors the film's exploration of madness.
Production Terry Gilliam’s signature surrealist style and meticulous production design create a deeply immersive and grimy dystopian atmosphere.
Acting Bruce Willis effectively subverts his typical action-hero persona to portray a vulnerable character descending into psychological instability.
Screenplay The film’s dense, non-linear screenplay rewards attentive viewers with a complex puzzle, though others find its fragmented nature and ambiguity confusing or pretentious.
Score While many praise the film's atmospheric intensity, opinions on the musical score are divided, with some finding the soundtrack disorienting and others viewing it as a deliberate stylistic choice.
