Key opinion
Ukryta gra is a Cold War thriller that provides an atmospheric, albeit flawed, experience anchored by strong performances. While viewers appreciate its period-accurate production design and tension, they remain divided on its portrayal of history and the lack of focus on the central chess narrative.
| Acting | Bill Pullman and the supporting cast deliver strong, compelling performances that anchor the film's tense narrative. | |
| Production | The film excels in building an authentic historical atmosphere through detailed production design and effective music. | |
| Screenplay | The screenplay treats the chess match as a mere background prop rather than the intellectual core of the story, disappointing viewers who expected a deeper focus on the game. | |
| Theme | The characterization of the protagonist's alcoholism and the depiction of the Russian antagonists rely on blunt, unsubtle caricatures that lack sophistication. | |
| Culture | Views on the film's political framing are polarized, with some seeing a thoughtful retrospective on Cold War espionage while others decry the film as blatant, aggressive propaganda. |
