Key opinion
This collaboration between Claude Lelouch and James Caan is a polarizing departure from Western tropes that prioritizes raw, unvarnished human interaction over traditional narrative structure. While some viewers appreciate the film's commitment to realistic, non-heroic portrayals, others dismiss it as an incoherent and aimlessly long experiment.
| Acting | James Caan delivers a grounded, organic performance that serves as a highlight of his career. | |
| Production | The film deliberately avoids heroic tropes, opting for a raw, unglamorized aesthetic that emphasizes human imperfection. | |
| Screenplay | The narrative is frequently criticized for being incoherent and lacking the necessary intrigue to sustain viewer interest. | |
| Runtime | The film's excessive duration is a point of contention; some perceive it as a bloated failure, while others accept it as part of Lelouch's contemplative, truth-seeking style. |
