Key opinion
Upgrade is widely regarded as a high-quality, inventive low-budget sci-fi action film that uses creative combat choreography to overcome its financial limitations. While critics and audiences largely praise its pacing and premise, some reviewers find the underlying plot tropes and character depth to be derivative or formulaic.
| Acting | Logan Marshall-Green provides an anchoring performance that convincingly portrays the protagonist's transition from vulnerability to machine-enhanced precision. | |
| Direction | The action sequences are highly effective, utilizing unique, machine-like combat choreography that stands out in the genre. | |
| Production | The film effectively uses a limited budget to establish a gritty, believable near-future cyberpunk atmosphere. | |
| Screenplay | Opinions on the screenplay are divided: some view the twists and revenge-driven narrative as refreshingly punchy and fun, while others dismiss the plot as clichéd, predictable, and lacking in logical depth. |
