Description
In small-town Texas, high school football is a religion, 17-year-old schoolboys carry the hopes of an entire community onto the gridiron every Friday night. When star quarterback Lance Harbor suffers an injury, the Coyotes are forced to regroup under the questionable leadership of John Moxon, a second-string quarterback with a slightly irreverent approach to the game.

Key opinion
Varsity Blues is a quintessentially late-90s teen sports drama that serves as either a nostalgic, heartfelt look at youth culture or an uneven, superficial collection of generic tropes. While critics remain divided on the film's execution and tonal consistency, viewers generally agree that it functions as a compelling time capsule of its era.
| Acting | John Voight delivers a standout performance as the tyrannical and morally compromised Coach Kilmer. | |
| Score | The soundtrack effectively captures the specific cultural spirit and energy of the late 1990s. | |
| Originality | The film acts as a reliable time capsule for those driven by nostalgia, though its narrative quality is seen by some as unoriginal and formulaic. | |
| Screenplay | The blend of comedy and teen drama is frequently criticized for lacking cohesion and failing to land its emotional beats, while fans argue it remains a sincere exploration of adolescent struggles. | |
| Acting | Performances from the young ensemble cast are polarizing, with some viewers finding them charismatic and others describing the characterizations as flat or underwritten. |
