Ближайшее будущее. Глобальная пандемия грибковой инфекции привела к разрушению биосферы, войнам и хаосу. Хейли Фриман — бывшая военнослужащая армии США и потомок беглого раба. Её прапрадедушка сбежал с плантации в Джорджии, перебрался в Канаду и построил там ферму. Уже столетия Фриманы владеют этой землёй, и с наступлением массового голода ферма становится очень ценным и желанным ресурсом.
